What is the Best Material for Boxing Gloves
Posted by ASLAN SPORTS
Boxing gloves are the fundamental gear when you get to boxing or kickboxing. Not only protecting your hands and wrists, boxing gloves also help to protect your opponents when sparring.
In the market, boxing gloves are sold with various material, ranging from luxury prices to even very low pricing. Boxing gloves are mainly made of two materials: leather and Polyurethane (PU) leather. Now you might probably wonder what are those material and which one is better?
PU boxing gloves
PU boxing gloves are made from artificial leather. Artificial leather gloves are usually a lot cheaper to buy than full grain leather boxing gloves. They can be good for beginners; however, if you are moving toward a higher level, we recommend you getting a more high-quality pair of leather gloves.
PU leather is created using split leather which is then overlaid with a polyurethane coating. Some brands use PU Leather on their gloves but call it a different name. It’s all a marketing, truth is it’s synthetic leather.
Although some PU boxing gloves do look attractive with creative designs, they are not durable and if you use them regularly, chances are they will probably end up ripping on you.
Leather boxing gloves
These are what you want to be using. They are usually more comfortable to wear and look a lot better. When you buy a new pair of leather gloves they will have that distinct 'leather-y' smell to them as well and the quality can also be spotted within a glance.
Getting a pair of leather boxing gloves would be a very good investment. They are much better than PU gloves if you train regularly because they last much longer than PU.
Let’s quickly take a look at the various quality of leather:
Full Grain Leather – This is the best leather you can get. It has a luxurious feel while also being smooth to touch. The grains are visible. And those gloves look great and performs even better.
Top Grain Leather – This is the next best thing after full grain leather. The surface of the leather is sanded and a coating is applied to make it to make it shiny. This type of leather is more bendy and thinner as the layer is separated from it. It is more affordable than full grain leather.
Genuine Leather – Many people are assume genuine leather is the best leather you can get because it has the word ‘genuine’ in it. It is not, however. This quality of leather is more widely available and much more affordable.
